I was using my itunes app today on Iphone 6 (it has been a while) but I noticed that I am no longer able to search for and preview play music before purchasing unless I sign up for the new "music" plan at 3 months free and then 12.99 a month after that. Is this now the norm?

By 'Settings' you mean Settings > Music on an iOS device, and if so you have Show Apple Music 'off' ? If you do have you tried toggling that setting on and off ?

You don't have to subscribe to Apple Music, it's optional - if you don't want to subscribe you can stop it showing via Settings > Music > Show Apple Music 'off'
I've done this in settings but the Apple sign up after 3 months free page still appears..
